Design
When seen from the front, the Vivo X80 Pro appears like any other premium Android flagship. It has a massive 6.78-inch screen, a punch-hole front-facing camera, and curved, sloping edges, making it quite a large slab.
Despite being 9.1mm thick, this phone has remarkably sleek curves. Similarly, it’s not exactly featherlight at 219 grams, but larger smartphones tend to be heavier.
However, it takes on an altogether different appearance when viewed from behind. That’s primarily because the camera module has a peculiar design in which a circular structure encases three of the four rear lenses. The fourth sits below them but within a bigger, mirrored rectangle that spans over the back of the phone.
Even if some of these design choices have been made before in other Vivo phones, I still find this one to be somewhat peculiar, especially the periscope lens’s placement so low on the back. However, the broad module does have one clear advantage: the phone doesn’t move from side to side while lying face down, making it a unique design choice.
The finishing is excellent in terms of both look and feel. There’s a surprising lack of roughness and an incredible amount of softness for something made of glass. It’s fantastic, yet putting it in a case will render it useless.
Vivo has opted for Schott’s Xensation Up protective glass, a competitor to Corning’s Gorilla Glass, to keep the screen of the phone safe(r) from drops and scratches. Additionally, the X80 Pro has invested in an IP68 rating, which should protect it from dust and water.
Display
The screen size is massive at 6.78 inches. However, because of its QHD+ resolution of 1440 x 3200, it offers a level of detail unmatched by even the best flagship devices. In addition to having the most recent LTPO 3.0 display technology, the phone’s refresh rate can be adjusted from 1Hz to 120Hz for optimal battery savings.
Those are only technical details, however; what really counts is the screen’s aesthetic appeal. Colorful, vivid, and usable even in pretty intense sunlight.
Another one of its defining features is a huge ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. It’s accompanied by a 48Mp ultrawide for capturing more of the scene, along with 12MP 2x telephoto and 8MP 5x periscope lenses – all using similar imaging specs from their predecessor for spectacular clarity.
However, there are a few minor adjustments. First, the ultrawide lens’ gimbal stabilization has been switched to the portrait lens. In contrast, the primary lens’ image sensor has upgraded to the ISOCELL GNV, a modified variant of the GN1 used before.
The phone can record video at resolutions up to 8K, although the quality will be optimal at HD or 4K. This is one of the greatest Android phones for recording video thanks to its exceptional stabilization across all lenses, which is especially noticeable when using the portrait lens’s gimbal technology.
Software
The phone comes preinstalled with FunTouch OS, which is not among the best Android skins and maybe the worst out there, along with Android 12.
