Vivo X80: Superb Camera on a Flagship Killer

From the shadows, Vivo has been silently selling flagship-level smartphones. To put it quietly, Vivo is not one of the names people connect with flagships. This is not due to a lack of effort or promotion by Vivo.

The Vivo X80 has a lot to offer: a triple camera arrangement developed in conjunction with Zeiss, a huge battery, and support for 80W rapid charging. So how well does Vivo X80’s high price tag mesh with its features? Let’s find out!

Availability

The base model of the Vivo X80, which has RAM of 8GB and 128GB of storage, costs Rs. 54,999. The other model, with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, can be yours for Rs 59,999. In addition, this smartphone is available from Vivo in two different colors: Cosmic Black and Urban Blue.

Design

The Vivo X80 has a premium build and design and all the bells and whistles of a top-tier smartphone. A large screen with gently rounded corners on either side guarantees everyone’s attention. The X80’s metal body is a hallmark of its high-end design. The right side of it has metal power and volume controls. When pressed, these buttons give a satisfying click.

Vivo has leveled the top and bottom of the frame. The bottom of the Vivo X80 is where you’ll find the SIM card slot, USB Type-C connector, main microphone, and speaker. They are so confident in the quality of the phone’s camera that they placed the infrared emitter, a secondary microphone, and the words “Professional Photography” on the top.

The massive camera module takes up over a third of the back panel. It extends somewhat but covers so much of the phone’s width that it doesn’t make the device wobble while it’s on a tabletop. The module includes three image sensors, laser focusing technology, and a dual-LED flash.

Vivo has given the Urban Blue version of the X80 a matte coating on its rear glass panel. With this coating, your phone will be less likely to show fingerprints. The color pushes the phone’s ability to stand out from the crowd, which is unusual and attractive. There’s a Cosmic Black version if you’d rather avoid bright colors. In addition, the box comes with a faux-leather case, which Vivo has bundled for free.

The 206-gram Vivo X80 is a hefty smartphone. When holding the phone with one hand, you will feel its heft. Fortunately, mass distribution is such that carrying it does not require excessive effort.

Display

The AMOLED screen of the Vivo X80 is 6.78 inches in size and has a full HD+ resolution. It can sample touch input at 240 Hz and has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. In addition, the screen is protected from scratches using Schott’s Xensation Up glass, and the display integrates a fingerprint scanner.

The display’s vivid colors and broad viewing angle will make even the longest Netflix marathons seem like a blast. The HDR support and powerful, clear-sounding stereo speakers make for an enjoyable gaming experience. The maximum brightness of the gadget is 1500 nits. The Vivo X80 is also easily readable in direct sunlight. Even in direct sunshine, the screen is surprisingly luminous.

Camera

The X80 must live up to the reputation of the Vivo X series for excellent camera quality. Vivo packed the X80 with three cameras: a 50-megapixel primary shooter with OIS, a 12-megapixel portrait shooter, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter. However, unlike the portrait camera on the Vivo X80 Pro, it does not have gimbal stabilization technology.

Zeiss Cinematic Video Bokeh modes are available in the Vivo X80’s camera app, giving the impression of an anamorphic lens. Camera lenses have the Zeiss T* coating by Vivo to cut down on ghosting and lens flares. The Vivo X80’s front camera is a 32-megapixel monster, perfect for those epic selfies.

Taking pictures with the built-in camera is a breeze thanks to the intuitive interface. Toggling between cameras and shooting modes is a breeze. The Zeiss Natural color rendering mode may be toggled on and off on the Vivo X80 to alter the output’s color profile. By default, Vivo used the X80 watermark, but you may turn it off if you choose.

The Vivo X80 can capture videos with up to 4K on the primary camera and 1080p on the front-facing camera.

Battery

The 4500 mAh battery keeps the phone running for 14-18 hours of normal use, which includes web browsing, movie playback, and phone conversations or video chats. The Vivo X80 has 80W Fast charging, which charges the phone from 0 to 100 percent in around 35 minutes. However, it lacks wireless charging, which is now standard on even budget phones. Although this is not a deal killer, Vivo really needs to fix this.

Software

The X80 comes preloaded with Vivo’s Funtouch OS 12, an Android 12 derivative. The Android update I had installed was the May 2022 one, which was up to date. Among Funtouch OS 12’s many personalization choices are skins you may design yourself. But there are a lot of unnecessary bloatware applications on the Vivo X80. Most of these programs are easily removable, allowing you to restore valuable space on your device.

Gamers may quickly switch to Funtouch OS 12’s Ultra Game mode through the menu on the side. In addition, you can boost the frame rate in-game using frame interpolation. To improve the visual experience, the “Eagle Eye View” function promises to use local tone mapping. It also offers an “Esports” mode that prevents the user from using any of the interface’s motions, prevents them from receiving alerts, and gives the CPU higher priority while gaming. Vivo has also promised to provide X80 owners with three years’ worth of security upgrades and updates covering three major Android operating system versions.

Performance

In India, the Vivo X80 is the first smartphone to use the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC. The octa-core architecture of this 4nm SoC includes the following:

●     A 3.2GHz ARM Cortex-X2 core.

●     2.85GHz performance cores based on the Cortex-A710.

●     1.8GHz efficiency cores based on the Cortex-A510.

The X80 furthermore has Vivo’s V1+ imaging chip. In addition, Vivo claims to have installed a sizable vapor cooling chamber to combat the heat. Finally, you may simulate up to 4GB of RAM with each model.

Conclusion

The Vivo X80 is an excellent option if you want a top-tier Android phone but don’t want to break the bank. It’s more expensive than the X70 Pro, but its benefits are worth the extra money. The X80 is a well-rounded smartphone that excels in several areas: speedy performance, long battery life, lightning-fast charging, and excellent photography. In addition, competent power users should be satisfied with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC. However, having fewer preloaded applications and less notification spam would significantly improve the user experience of Funtouch OS 12. Therefore this is an area where Vivo could do better.
