Vivo T1 5G: Fashion Over Substance

In recent years, Vivo has been on a roll. Its flagship smartphones have advanced by leaps and bounds and can now compete with the likes of the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

One segment of the Indian smartphone industry that Xiaomi hasn’t yet broken into is the mid-range segment. Designed to compete with Xiaomi, Vivo’s new T1 range of 5G-enabled smartphones offers impressive battery life, sleek industrial design, and speedy performance at a surprisingly low price.

Vivo seems to have incorporated all the necessary components to produce a successful mid-range smartphone that would capture the interest of the Indian market.

Price and Availability

Vivo’s T1 5 G’s entry-level configuration, which includes 128 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM, is priced at Rs 19,990. The 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage cost Rs 23,990. The variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs Rs 20,990.

You can get the phone from both the Vivo India online shop and the Flipkart website, which Walmart owns. This phone comes in two different colors: Starlight Black and Rainbow Fantasy.

Design

Like Apple’s iPhone, Vivo’s phones have a streamlined, geometric aesthetic. Its basic design comprises flat lines with a gradient back for emphasis. Therefore, it’s safe to say that this phone has a pleasing design.

At 8.3mm and 187g, it’s neither the thinnest nor heaviest device around. However, even though it looks like metal and is built entirely of plastic, the construction quality is just slightly better than usual.

The USB-C connector and headphone jack are both present and functional in this configuration.

A trustworthy fingerprint scanner is installed on the device’s side. The volume rockers are satisfyingly clicky, although the fingerprint scanner buries the primary power button, which may be a bit of a squeeze.

Display

The screen is 6.58 inches in size and has a chin and a teardrop cutout for the front-facing camera.

The screen is OK, but it’s not as good as other brands in the same price range. We’re talking about a 120Hz IPS panel with Full HD+ resolution. The 240Hz sampling rate for touch is likewise very high quality. The colors seem good. However, the screen is a little dim.

The screen becomes sufficiently bright, making it usable for outdoor use even when the sun is out. The Vivo T1 5G display is sharp, has vivid colors, and has minimal bezels. However, many current Androids utilize smaller punch holes, so the waterdrop notch appears too huge.

Compared to rivals, the T1 5G’s haptic feedback features are also worse. Moreover, its harsh haptics isn’t ideal for typing, which is likely why Vivo disabled it by default.

Camera

This mobile device has three separate photographic sensors. However, only one of the three cameras is useful, with the others mainly serving as filler, so the phone may be marketed as having three lenses.

The main camera has a fantastic 50-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. It captures clear and vibrant images in well-lit settings and holds its own in dark ones.

This phone’s video recording capabilities are below par for 2022: they max out at 1080p. Even in dim conditions, it can record decent video, but the audio isn’t great, and the stabilization may go wonky if your hands shake. Of course, all of this drastically worsens when it becomes dark out.

Battery and Charging

The Vivo T1 has a charging time of 15 minutes for a 15 percent recharge and 30 minutes for a full recharge. However, it took 2 hours and 7 minutes to charge using the included power brick fully.

This is a considerable setback compared to the 20 minutes that some of the newest 120W charging phones can achieve. Nevertheless, the phone’s battery stays substantial at 5000mAh while paired with a rather basic 18W charging brick.

As far as battery life goes, it’s rather remarkable, as it can go through 7 hours of screen on during a single charge. Moreover, it’ll still have enough energy for more than one workday, even with medium-to-heavy use.

Software

The T1 5G, powered by FuntouchOS on top of Android 12, has been finely optimized. As a result, compared to competitors like Xiaomi, Vivo’s user interface is more streamlined and often offers newer versions of Android right out of the box and continues to get upgrades throughout the phone’s lifespan.

Vivo’s FuntouchOS has kept the same look and feel from a few years ago—one that is quite stock Android–like. But, unfortunately, there is bloatware; if you don’t disable the adverts during setup, you’ll have to deal with them after that.

Performance

Regarding smartphones, the Vivo T1 5G is among the first to provide the cutting-edge Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G CPU. Moreover, the 5G modem is an additional feature of this 6nm chipset. This implies the phone is prepared for the next generation of networks and is thus largely future-proof.

The performance is excellent in normal situations. The 120Hz display is a fantastic bonus for gamers, but it also makes the phone more responsive in general usage.

This phone has 128GB of internal storage, and a microSD card reader supports external expansion. In addition, you may have it with either 4GB or 6GB of storage space.

Conclusion

It’s not easy to find a smartphone for less than Rs 20,000 in India. One might argue that the Indian market is the most cutthroat for these products, with Xiaomi maintaining an iron hold on the industry for the last seven years.

The T1 5G from Vivo is a well-considered rebuttal to this dominance. However, there are a few things about this phone that Xiaomi’s former phones haven’t been able to do: provide exceptional performance, have a fantastic battery life, and have excellent cameras.

The software is spotless, and although Vivo could improve the quality of its cameras and overall construction, such as by adding water resistance and Gorilla Glass, the essentials are there.

This is an excellent option for those in the market for a speedy, reasonably priced primary or backup phone.
