Revolutionising the Smartphone Experience: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Takes Center Stage

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 represents the latest addition to Samsung’s series of foldable smartphones. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 offers an enhanced photography experience and is the most advanced smartphone they have ever manufactured. Additionally, it is lighter and thinner compared to previous models in the Galaxy series. This article provides an overview of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Launch in India, including its specifications.

The Z Fold 4 marks a significant milestone as it is now recommended to a broader audience, with the potential to remain a reliable device for many years. It introduces features such as a new taskbar, an updated version of Android 12L, improved cameras, a wider front display, and a brighter main screen, all packaged in a sleeker design. However, it is worth noting that the price remains high, and the device is still bulky.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 closely resembles its predecessor in terms of aesthetics. However, it moves closer to traditional smartphones with a slightly larger cover screen, a slimmer body, and a less prominent hinge. A fingerprint sensor is positioned along one of the edges. Like its predecessor, it boasts an IPX8 certification, making it water-resistant up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. The Fold 4 is slightly shorter in height but marginally wider when unfolded. In addition, it features a flatter aluminium frame with reduced bevelled edges, a slimmer profile when folded, and weighs 263g, making it more manageable.

Subtle design changes can be noticed around the USB port and the frame near the external display. Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 retains the exact placement of ports, buttons, antenna bands, and microphones as its predecessor, the Fold 3. This design consistency ensures familiarity for users transitioning between the two models and maintains the functionality and accessibility that users have grown accustomed to.

Display

The key highlight of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is its impressive and expansive AMOLED foldable display, which adds to its overall appeal. The new aspect ratio of the display enhances its suitability for media consumption. In addition, the massive 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels offers remarkable clarity, crispness, and brightness, as expected from a Samsung display.

The cover screen, measuring 6.2 inches diagonally, features narrower bezels and demonstrates excellent durability for prolonged usage. Both the large folding panel and the smaller outer touch screen of the Z Fold 4 utilize 120Hz AMOLED technology, delivering a smooth user experience, immersive entertainment, and vibrant, vivid colours with deep black backgrounds. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ is employed for scratch and shatter resistance, though no pre-applied screen guard exists.

The internal folding display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 maintains the same size as the previous model, measuring 7.6 inches. The resolution is slightly adjusted due to the wider aspect ratio, but the pixel density remains unchanged. In addition, Samsung has strengthened ultra-thin glass for improved durability.

The folding screen incorporates an under-display camera, utilizing a 4-megapixel unit similar to the Fold 3. However, Samsung has restructured the display pixels around the camera to minimize its visibility in the user interface. The folding display also offers a wider range for its variable refresh rate, ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, enabling power-saving capabilities.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4′s camera system comprises five cameras, with two on the front panel (one on the cover screen and one beneath the main screen) and three on the back, catering to photography and video recording.

The standout feature of the triple-camera setup on the back is the 50-megapixel primary sensor, accompanied by an f/1.8 aperture lens. This setup offers an 85-degree viewing angle, dual-pixel autofocus, and optical image stabilization (OIS). Working in conjunction with this is a secondary 12-megapixel sensor paired with an ultra-wide f/2.2 lens capable of capturing a wide 123-degree field of view.

For zoom capabilities, a telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture is combined with a 10-megapixel sensor, taking third place in the camera setup. This telephoto lens features optical image stabilization and phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and offers up to 30X spatial magnification.

Underneath the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4’s primary screen is a front-facing camera with a 4-megapixel sensor and an f/1.8 aperture lens. The front-facing camera on the cover display features a 10-megapixel sensor paired with an f/2.2 aperture lens.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a dual battery setup, offering a combined capacity of 4,400 mAh. Samsung claims that when using their 25W charger (sold separately), the smartphone can reach approximately 50% battery capacity in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the device supports PowerShare wireless charging, allowing it to share its battery power with compatible devices wirelessly.

Software and Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 runs on Android 12L, incorporating Samsung’s latest One UI 4.1.1 as its user interface.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 features a powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-a-chip (SoC) and 12 gigabytes of RAM. In terms of storage, it offers an impressive built-in capacity of up to 1 terabyte, providing ample space for various applications and files. With this combination, users can expect exceptional speed and performance across various tasks, ensuring a seamless and efficient user experience.

Conclusion

The prices for different Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 variants have increased compared to the previous model. While the amount of RAM remains the same at 12GB, the base variant now comes with 256GB of storage and is priced at Rs. 1,54,999. The next variant offers 512GB of storage, priced at Rs. 1,64,999. Additionally, Samsung is introducing a variant with 1TB of storage in India, which comes at Rs. 1,84,999. With its high price tag, the 1TB storage variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 positions itself as one of the most expensive smartphones available in India.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 incorporates a more energy-efficient system-on-a-chip (SoC), enhanced primary and telephoto cameras, and improved battery longevity. While it is slightly more manageable than its predecessor, it should be noted that it remains a powerful smartphone. In addition, users should exercise caution when handling the folding display, as it requires extra care compared to a conventional phone display.
