The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is the latest addition to the Galaxy M series, succeeding the M52 5G with notable enhancements. However, its specifications offer a mixed bag of improvements.
Starting with the cameras, the main sensor is now larger and higher-res, but this comes at the expense of downgraded ultrawide and macro units.
The 5G-capable Dimensity 900 performs well regarding chipset, although the predecessor’s Snapdragon 778 is more powerful.
The 6.7-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate remains unchanged, and the battery capacity of 5,000mAh and 25W charging rating are carried over from the M52, which is a positive aspect.
While the specifications are impressive, the crucial question remains: how does it perform in everyday usage?
Design
Samsung’s midrange design has had some inconsistencies, which is understandable given the wide lineup.
The most noticeable change in the M53’s appearance is the quad-camera setup. This time, Samsung seamlessly integrated the bulge into the rear panel, creating a slightly different look.
The plastic panel has a frosted finish that plays with light, displaying various shades of blue. However, it does attract fingerprints and smudges.
The glossy frame of the Galaxy M53 is prone to smudging but is thin and curved, avoiding the appearance of a greasy mirror.
The power button with an embedded fingerprint sensor is slightly recessed into the frame, conveniently positioned for operation with the right thumb. However, initially, accessing it with the left index finger may require more effort.
The phone features a dual card slot on the opposite side, accommodating two nano SIM cards or a nano SIM and a microSD card. Unfortunately, the M53 has no IP rating for water and dust resistance.

Vivid mode provides a five-position temperature slider and RGB sliders accessible through an ‘Advanced settings’ button. This mode supports a wide colour gamut and is reasonably accurate for displaying DCI-P3 content.
While the Galaxy M53 lacks HDR capability, it holds Widevine L1 certification, enabling Full HD resolution on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
In the display settings, a Motion smoothness option allows you to enable the 120Hz refresh rate. The Standard setting delivers a consistent 60Hz refresh rate across all activities.
On the other hand, the High setting keeps the display locked at 120Hz without adaptive activity-based switching. This means the screen maintains the full 120Hz refresh rate even during video playback, which may impact battery life. In addition, certain apps like the camera viewfinder and Google Maps will force a switch to a 60Hz refresh rate, while other content will continue to be displayed at 120Hz.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G has a quad-camera setup on the rear. This configuration comprises a 108MP main lens, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. In addition, there is a 32MP front camera for selfies and video calls.
The camera app follows the standard Samsung design found on their current phones. Swiping left or right allows you to switch between various modes, and you can customise the viewfinder by rearranging or removing certain modes. Vertical swipes switch between the front and rear cameras.
The settings icon is located in the upper left corner of the screen, providing access to options such as grid lines, location data, and screen optimiser. Interestingly, the full resolution mode for the primary camera is accessed through the aspect options, which may not be immediately intuitive.
A Pro mode offers precise control over exposure settings like ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. It also includes a manual focus with peaking, although there is no live histogram or the ability to adjust settings for anything other than the main camera.
Regarding video capabilities, the front and rear cameras of the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G can record 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 60fps. The device also features a super steady mode to ensure smooth video recording on the move. Additionally, super slow-motion videos with a frame rate of up to 240fps can be captured.
Battery
The battery capacity of the Galaxy M53 remains unchanged at 5,000mAh, just like the M52, but it is significantly lower than the 7,000mAh capacity of the M51. Interestingly, the A53 now also features a 5,000mAh battery, eliminating the nominal advantage that the M model once held. This marks a departure from the A52 series, which had power packs with a capacity 4,500mAh. We’ll need to accept and adapt to the absence of a charger in the Galaxy M53 package.
Software
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G operates on One UI 4.1, built on the Android 12 platform. The user interface is designed to be straightforward and user-friendly. In addition, it offers an array of customisation choices, allowing you to modify settings such as font size and style to suit your preferences.
Performance
The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset, departing from its predecessor, which utilised the Snapdragon System-on-Chip (SoC) series. However, the Dimensity 900 performs impressively and effortlessly manages any task you throw its way.
The chipset is coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Additionally, the phone incorporates a RAM Plus feature that utilizes internal storage to provide an additional 6GB of RAM. As a result, multitasking becomes seamless, and the phone smoothly handles all applications running in the background.
