Redmi Note 12 Pro: Full Package at a Premium Cost

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro line of mid-range 5G smartphones was released last week in India as a follow-up to last year’s Xiaomi 11i. They debuted in China in 2016 and have since made their way to India under the same moniker. The Redmi Note 12 Pro is visually identical to its predecessor in terms of screen size, resolution, and overall appearance. Still, it improves upon these aspects by including additional display features, a slightly speedier CPU, and a new camera.

Is it reasonable to pay Rs. 24,999 for this phone? Come on, then, let’s find out.

Design

The phone’s ultra-narrow bottom bezel measures 2.9 millimeters, which is impressive. Still, the Realme 10 Pro+ has a bottom bezel at 2.33 millimeters and a curved 61-degree display with 2160 hertz pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming.

When it comes to button placement, the right side of the phone is home to the volume rockers and power buttons (which also double as the fingerprint reader). The bottom has two SIM card slots, a speaker grill, a main microphone, and a USB Type-C connector. In addition, the device has an infrared sensor, a secondary microphone, and a 3.5mm headphone connector on the top.

The polycarbonate body conceals the absence of antenna slots. The phone’s X-axis linear vibration motor allows for user-defined vibrating patterns throughout the user interface. This model lacks expandable storage, although its predecessor included a hybrid SIM slot.

You can purchase the phone in Stardust Purple, Frosted Blue, or Onyx Black in India. The phone’s anti-glare, matte surface makes it resistant to fingerprints. Although Xiaomi claims to employ strengthened glass, the device’s rear is not protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Additionally, the phone has very high IP53 ratings for its price point.

Display

The Redmi Note 12 Pro’s screen is a 6.67-inch Full HD+ Pro AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, a 2.5D curved glass screen, and a pixel density of around 394 PPI. With HDR content playing, the screen’s brightness may be increased to a peak of 900 nits in high brightness mode. In addition, it supports DCI-P3 broad color gamut; thus, the hues are bright.

While turned on, the 240Hz touch sampling rate and 120Hz display refresh rate provide a silky smooth experience, particularly when browsing through the user interface or playing a video game. Depending on the material shown, this can adjust its refresh rate automatically between 30Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz. You can stream videos in HDR 10+ on both Netflix and YouTube. Dolby Vision is supported, and it’s compatible with Netflix. This is rare in phones in the pricing range. Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the latest generation, protects the phone’s display.

Camera

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus has three cameras on the rear side. Among them are a 200MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro sensor. In addition, the front-facing punch hole hides a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

The primary camera on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus can record 4K video at 30 frames per second. Still, the front-facing camera can only capture 1080p video at 60 frames per second. Nevertheless, the 4K film turns out fantastic in terms of clarity and specificity. Moreover, thanks to OIS, your footage will seem steadier.

The camera’s user interface is similar to that of other MIUI 123-powered Xiaomi and POCO devices. However, Redmi has enabled Cam2API by default, so you may side-load ported Google Camera APKs for sophisticated editing, including RAW capture.

Audio

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus has two stereo speakers certified as suitable for Hi-Res music. As a result, audio is produced at a high volume and in excellent clarity. Furthermore, to take advantage of the Hi-Res audio certification, you also have a 3.5mm audio connection for use with wired headphones. As a result, the sound quality is excellent and adds to the enjoyment of the multimedia experience as a whole.

Software

It ships with Android 12 and MIUI 13 on top. The latest Android security patch is from November 2022. The firm has confirmed that Android 13 will be updated. However, this update has no definite date since MIUI 14 has not yet been released worldwide. A few of the pre-installed MIUI 13 applications are removable. The standard features include a Gesture shortcut, a one-handed option, a Quick Ball, and more.

Battery

The phone’s built-in 5000mAh (typical) battery may survive for a day under intensive usage and more than a day under ordinary use, all owing to optimizations in the MIUI 13 operating system.

The included 67W charger can go from zero to 50 percent in 15 minutes and from zero to 100 percent in roughly 46 minutes. The Redmi Note 12 Pro+’s 4980mAh battery is significantly smaller but supports 120W fast charging. To refresh your memory, the Xiaomi 11i has a 5160mAh battery.

Performance

It’s one of the first smartphones to employ the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 6nm SoC, that is essentially an overclocked version of the Dimensity 920 seen in the 9 Pro+. Two A78 processors run at up to 2.6GHz, and six A55 processors at up to 2GHz. In addition, the device features up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and a Mali-G68 MC4 processor.

The business claims that the product’s 3000mm2 VC liquid cooling heat dissipation and 12-layer graphite sheets make it superior to its forerunner. During prolonged usages, such as while playing games or using 4G data, it may get warm to the touch, but not unbearably so.

Conclusion

The Redmi Note 12 Pro, which starts at Rs. 24,999, is a good advance over the Xiaomi 11i, thanks to its new display features like variable refresh rate, Dolby Vision, and 1920Hz High-Frequency PWM Dimming. In addition, the improved camera now has optical image stabilization (OIS), and the performance and gaming capabilities provided by the Dimensity 1080 SoC are commendable without the annoyance of excessive heat. However, the design, ultra-wide, and 2MP macro cameras, as well as the version of Android used in the device, are all carryovers from the last model.
