OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G: Clearly Stylish but Questionable Value

“The Portrait Expert” is Oppo’s ambitious claim for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro, the company’s newest flagship product and the most costly Reno phone to date in the Indian market. Oppo designed this phone with the photography enthusiast in mind, but it also has the necessary hardware and software to be useful in everyday situations. The Reno 8 Pro continues the series’ custom of combining high-end aesthetics with cutting-edge hardware. On July 18, 2022, OPPO released the Reno 8 Pro to the public (Official). The OPPO Reno 8 Pro smartphone is available in black and green.

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro’s MariSilicon X NPU is a step up over the one seen in the Oppo Find X5 Pro, and it’s used to handle HDR videos better. This smartphone certainly appears promising with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor, a unibody casing, and a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX system-on-chip. The Reno 8 Pro, for 45,999, has much proving to do to justify its high asking price. Is the price justified? Let’s take a look at it.

Build and Display

Oppo has a proven track record regarding its smartphones’ aesthetics, namely the Reno series. Once again, Oppo has spared no expense in making the Reno 8 Pro’s design a thing of beauty. The aluminium framework and all-glass construction give it a high-end feel and aesthetic. In addition, the display is practically flush with the sides, and the sides are flat, giving it an iPhone-like appearance.

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro has a massive camera module, yet despite this, it still only weighs 183 g, making it a relatively lightweight construction with good weight distribution. The phone’s thickness of 7.34 mm means it’s not as hefty as some other premium models on the market. The gadget is easy on the hands, although its size (6.7 inches) makes using it with one hand difficult.

According to the manufacturer, the Reno 8 Pro features a “unibody design” since the camera module and the back panel are combined into one continuous piece of glass. The final result is attractive and attention-grabbing.

The phone’s modest camera module bend makes it easy to grip even while in landscape mode since your index or middle finger may rest in a natural groove. In general, this is a beautifully designed phone, and it may well be the finest of its kind.

The Glazed Green color option has a glossy glass panel on the back, and it does a great job of avoiding fingerprints and smudges. It has an IP54 certification for dust and water protection, while rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE in the same price range provide greater ratings. In addition, the phone uses Gorilla Glass 5 to make it resistant to damage from weather and accidental drops.

Display

The AMOLED display of the Oppo Reno 8 Pro is 6.7 inches in size, and it has a Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 120 hertz. However, there is no dynamic refresh rate switching. Thus it always runs at that rate. If you require more battery life, you may reduce the refresh rate to 60 Hz in the options menu.

The display’s bezels are razor-thin, and although not every side is the same, this helps give the phone a more high-end appearance and feel. In addition, the device’s screen-to-body ratio of 93.4% is excellent for a device in this price range.

The panel’s performance is excellent, despite its unattractive appearance. With HDR10+ and Widevine L1 compatibility, you can watch HDR high-definition videos on services like Amazon Prime and Netflix. The display’s colors are vivid, albeit sometimes oversaturated, making watching content on this device a pleasure. You can adjust the display’s color setting to Natural if the artificial colors are bothersome. In any case, the resulting image is sharp and colorful.

Camera

Although Oppo advertises the Reno 8 Pro as a photography phone, its camera hardware is reportedly subpar. All three rear cameras provide inconsistent photos, with the front-facing camera providing the most reliable results.

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro has a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide shooter, and a 2-megapixel macro camera in a vertical triple rear camera stack. There’s also a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 camera for taking pictures of yourself.

Next, the phone uses the MariSilicon X NPU to record better videos in dim conditions. The phone’s main camera can record up to 4K at 30 fps, while the front-facing camera can shoot up to 1080p at 30 frames per second.

Battery

A 4,500 mAh battery and an 80 W SuperVOOC fast charger are included with the Oppo Reno 8 Pro. This phone has fantastic battery life, lasting more than a day on a single charge under normal conditions. A full day of use is possible on a single charge.

Performance

Powered by the same MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX SoC as the more affordable OnePlus 10R, the Oppo Reno 8 Pro can provide similar performance. It has 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage in addition to the chipset. The phone includes support for more virtual RAM, but given that 12 GB is more than enough for even intensive multitasking, this is probably not something you’ll need. In addition, Oppo’s MariSilicon X Imaging NPU, developed in-house, works with this CPU to improve video recording.

Because of the strength of the Dimensity 8100-MAX SoC, it excels at typical tasks. Communication methods and activities such as phoning, messaging, social media, and surfing the web are all fully functional.

Software

The operating system for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro is ColorOS 12.1, which is based on Android 12. Oppo has committed to providing two years’ worth of Android OS upgrades. Oppo’s two-year pledge of OS upgrades is unimpressive, especially because several rivals offer three or four years. There is a lot of unnecessary bloatware on this phone. Users shouldn’t have to cope with this baggage level at the 45K price range, but thankfully you can delete most of these third-party software.

Conclusion

Although its price tag may imply otherwise, the Reno 8 Pro feels like a real flagship smartphone. So if you’re searching for a flagship-level experience without breaking the bank, go no further than the Reno 8 Pro, which easily feels like one of the greatest Reno phones Oppo has launched.
