Oneplus Nord 2: Budget-friendly Smartphone With a Top-notch Camera

In certain respects, the OnePlus Nord 2 marks the company’s debut. It’s the first smartphone to debut with the combined OxygenOS and ColorOS operating systems and the first smartphone from OnePlus to use a MediaTek processor.

While the availability of the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro exclude the Nord 2 from flagship status, the SoC is currently MediaTek’s flagship. This is because OnePlus placed a lot of faith in the OnePlus experience as a selling point.

Design

The camera bulge on the OnePlus Nord 2 is typical of the brand’s aesthetic. It resembles the camera bump found on the OnePlus 9 quite closely, with its two larger sensors above a smaller one and its accompanying illumination. This is because, in my opinion, OnePlus wants the Nord 2 to appear as a flagship device, even if it isn’t. The desired alert slider, which allows you to choose between quiet, vibrate-only, and full notification noises, is conveniently located on the side of the device.

The Haze Blue unit’s reverse side doesn’t show fingerprints. In spite of its shiny finish and little slipperiness in the hands, this is the ideal smartphone for those who prefer not to use a case. However, if that color is too flashy for your tastes, the phone is also available in a more subdued Gray Sierra.

The OnePlus Nord 2 isn’t exactly the most pocket-friendly smartphone out there, but it is shorter than many of the year’s other top models. The reduced size and weight make it convenient to carry everywhere. You won’t notice that the OnePlus Nord 2 is too large in your hand and fits well. It is 8.2mm in thickness and weighs a total of 189 grams.

The phone’s rear is made of glass, while the “metalized” plastic makes up the sides. When you get your hands on it, you’ll see that it’s really just shiny plastic.

Display

The OnePlus Nord 2’s 6.43-inch AMOLED screen boasts a Full HD resolution and 90Hz refresh rate, and a 20:9 aspect ratio. It gets bright enough (though it’s hard to see in direct sunshine), and it looks great with any type of material. If you’re looking to get into mobile gaming or watch a lot of video on your phone, the hole-punch camera may be an eyesore, but for most people, it’s not a problem.

Screen uniformity has been a concern with various OnePlus devices in the past, but not on OnePlus Nord 2. No high-end display technology is present, so don’t expect HDR support or an extremely brilliant screen. This is a very conventional panel in that it does not support 10-bit colors. At this price range, there isn’t anything seriously wrong with that, but it is worth highlighting. It’s an efficient and straightforward presentation, perfect for its intended purpose.

Camera

The 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary sensor with an f/1.88 aperture and optical image stabilization is the crown jewel of the three cameras on the OnePlus Nord 2’s backside.

The ultra-wide camera on the OnePlus 9 Pro has the same sensor as the regular camera. It then transitions to an 8MP ultra-wide lens (f/2.25) and a 2MP mono lens (f/2.4). Even while the Nord 2’s 32MP single-lens camera for selfies is a step down from the Nord’s 48MP dual-lens camera, OnePlus has upgraded the sensor to the Sony IMX615, making it a very capable device.

The primary camera on the OnePlus Nord 2 is really powerful, and it not only excels in bright light but also does very well in low light with night mode enabled. In addition, the primary camera has low noise and good color reproduction while taking photos.

Battery

The OnePlus Nord 2 has a 4,500mAh battery, so it should easily last a day on a single charge. Of course, you could push it if you’re a heavy user, but OnePlus has incorporated many great features to help you stay powered up.

Not all smartphone makers include a charger in the package anymore, but OnePlus does with the OnePlus Nord 2. So you’ll be ready to start using the 65W charging immediately.

Performance

For many, the OnePlus Nord 2’s performance is the greatest mystery. This is because MediaTek and OnePlus worked together to create the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI, a smartphone that focuses heavily on artificial intelligence. The “prime” core of the Dimensity 1200’s octa-core SoC can reach speeds of up to 3GHz, while the remaining three performance cores can reach speeds of up to 2.6GHz. The maximum frequency of the remaining four cores, all of which are Cortex-A55, is 2.0GHz.

Graphics processing unit (GPU) features include a nine-core ARM Mali-G77 GPU with MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 gaming technology support. Support for simultaneous voice and data transmission via 5G networks and an improvement in touchscreen responsiveness thanks to multitouch input are among the features included. Together, these features enable super hotspot power reductions and the use of ray tracing in games and augmented reality applications.

The Nord 2 operates smoothly and efficiently in everyday use. The Dimensity 1200-AI is a powerful and effective chipset, and the Nord 2 outperforms the Nord and the OnePlus Nord CE in terms of raw CPU power alone.

Software

The combined features of OxygenOS and ColorOS are debuting on this first smartphone. Although this has been one of the smoothest runs of OxygenOS in quite some time, a few issues need fixing. First of all, it’s obvious that “OxygenOS” is only a veneer over ColorOS; several features haven’t even been updated. The camera app is the same OPPO Camera from earlier versions of ColorOS (despite the package name saying it’s the “OPLUS Camera”), replete with the OPPO-branded iconography.

There are indeed better software options for Android devices, but OxygenOS is still a top choice. OxygenOS 11.3, on the OnePlus 6, feels like a hybrid between the OxygenOS of older OnePlus devices and ColorOS.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord 2 doesn’t stand out in any particular way, but that’s not why you’d buy a budget phone. Instead, this device may be the ideal option if you need a phone that can serve several purposes.
