The OnePlus 9 Pro: High-end performance at a reasonable price

If you’re looking at features and quality, the OnePlus 9 Pro can stand against the top Android phones on the market. But in terms of market share and consumer awareness, it will always be a device for a select number of fans who demand a particular level of sophistication from their Android gadget. OnePlus’s flagship phone, the OnePlus 9 Pro, was released in 2021. This phone is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 system-on-chip (SoC).

Quick Review

  • You won’t find a better smartphone than the OnePlus 9 Pro.
  • The base Pro model comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the top-end phone comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
  • Beautiful colors, deep blacks, and a 120Hz variable refresh rate characterize the 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED display. Performance is at the same level as the Galaxy S21 Plus and better than the iPhone 12 Pro.
  • The quality of photos taken with the OnePlus 9 Pro is high. The colors are soft and earthy. However, the nightscape varies greatly.
  • The OnePlus 9 Pro is a powerful Android phone and competes favorably with the ROG Phone 5.
  • The battery on the OnePlus 9 Pro lasts more than 10 hours in 120Hz mode, thanks to its 4,500 mAh battery. It is the quickest charging phone going from dead to 50% in 15 minutes on the 65W charger and from there to 99% in 30 minutes.
  • Both Android 11 and OxygenOS 11 are preinstalled on the OnePlus 9 Pro. Two years of operating system upgrades (Android 13) and three years of security updates are included (2024).

Design

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s design is beautiful and immediately grabs your attention. That’s expected from OnePlus, which has always delivered groundbreaking mobile devices. The OnePlus 9 Pro is a large smartphone, measuring 6.4 x 2.9 x 0.34 inches. However, at only 197 grams, it is remarkably lightweight and convenient. Be wary of the OnePlus 9 Pro slipping out of your pocket or hand, as the coating makes it quite slippery. Its body is sized enough to use with one hand, but its 6.7-inch screen is expansive, covering the entire front.

Unlike the haptics on many Android phones, the OnePlus 9 Pro’s are crisp and precise. The trade-off is that they’re not particularly sturdy. The OnePlus 9 Pro has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 CPU and eight gigabytes of RAM on the 128GB variant.

Ultimately, the OnePlus smartphone wins out because of its curved screen. However, the curvature is not overpowering and will not prevent accidental use. The all-screen experience on the 9 Pro is spoiled only by the circular cutout for the camera on the top left.

Dashing Display

The screen quality on the OnePlus 9 Pro is excellent. It’s vivid, with vibrant hues, deep blacks, and an adjustable refresh rate of 120 hertz. In addition, the display of the OnePlus 9 Pro is preset to Vivid by default. The display’s touch sampling rate is also crucial to its stellar performance. OnePlus’s high-speed touchscreen technology is called Hyper Touch, and the company says it increases data transfer rates by a factor of six. Because of this, the OnePlus 9 Pro has an extremely low touch latency, which is very important for certain games.

Improved Performance and Battery Life

The OnePlus 9 Pro’s lightning-fast speed and responsiveness are to be expected, considering the device’s high-end internals. The screen looks fantastic, with deep, vivid colors and easy readability in any light. Moving through menus and lists is smooth, and basic functions like closing applications and switching between them are quite quick. In addition, the display’s high brightness and vibrant colors make watching videos a pleasure.

The in-display fingerprint sensor worked reliably. However, you’ll need to contort your fingers to access it while holding the phone. Change the clock faces on the ambient display, the fingerprint sensor animations, and the edge illumination for incoming notifications via the Customization option in the Settings app. The less-rounded display’s corners are an improvement over the OnePlus 8 Pro in terms of avoiding inadvertent touches. The Snapdragon 888 is a high-powered SoC that can easily handle modern software and games.

A 65W charger is included in the package and can very rapidly charge the phone. In addition, the phone’s 4,500 mAh battery is two separate cells, allowing faster charging. However, the battery life of OnePlus phones is rather more varied than that of other brands.

The Camera

The quality of the OnePlus 9 Pro’s camera is average. It has a bluish cast and eliminates shadows for more uniform illumination. When compared to an iPhone, its images are more visually arresting but less technically precise.

The camera system is adequate but cannot compete with the high-end cameras found in the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, the ultrawide photos are now distortion-free, the Nightscape mode has been enhanced, and the telephoto lens has a 3.3x optical and 30x digital zoom, among other features.

OnePlus has partnered with photography industry heavyweight Hasselblad to enhance the quality of its own camera output.

Conclusion

Compared to other locations like the United States and Europe, India’s OnePlus 9 Pro only supports two 5G bands (N41, N78) for both SA and NSA modes. Considering the current condition of 5G in India, this may not seem like a huge issue, but it is something to think about.

The OnePlus 9 Pro comes equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and several satellite navigation systems, in addition to the fast RAM and storage I mentioned before. Furthermore, the  9 Pro, the firm claims, has thicker graphite sheets, a bigger vapour chamber, and a larger copper coil to handle extreme temperatures better.

The 9 Pro offers certain improvements over the ordinary 9, and you may want them for the same reason you’d choose a OnePlus device over a Samsung one: it looks and acts differently from the phones everyone else is carrying.
